How to Survive a Season with Kids in Multiple Different Sports

Multiple kids, multiple sports, multiple schedules - and somehow you're supposed to be in all these places at once. Here's how sports families can actually make it work.

  1. Get a shared family calendar and use it religiously. Color-code by kid or sport so you can see the whole week at a glance. Digital or on the fridge - just make it the single source of truth.
  2. Divide and conquer with your partner (or your village). Decide ahead of time who's covering which practice or game each week instead of scrambling last minute.
  3. Build a "go bag" for each sport. Keep separate bags packed and ready by the door - cleats, gear, water bottle - so you're never digging for shin guards five minutes before you need to leave. Pack these bags either the night before or right after everything is cleaned and ready.
  4. Batch your errands around practice times. Awkward amount of unused time during practice? Use it. Answer emails, meal plan, or knock out a phone call instead of driving home and back.
  5. Recruit a carpool for at least one sport. You don't have to drive every single practice. Trade off with another family to buy back an evening a week.
  6. Accept that some games will be missed. You can't be everywhere. Talk to your kids ahead of time so it's not a surprise, and make sure someone they trust is in the stands.
  7. Keep a rotating snack and gear stash in the car. (or in a small cooler that can easily go in and out of the car if its hot) Extra socks, a spare water bottle, granola bars - future you will be grateful during the week you forget everything.
  8. Protect one no-sports day if you can. Even a single evening at home resets everyone. It doesn't have to be much - just a pause in the schedule.
  9. Let go of a spotless house during peak season. Multi-sport season is a survive-it season, not a thrive-in-every-area season. That's normal, not failure.
  10. Celebrate the chaos, not just the calendar. The carpool line, the sideline snacks, the multi-sport juggling act - it's a lot, but it's also what your family will remember fondly one day.
